I love hunting and the outdoors- I pride my self in being prepared and never taking a shot at a distance that I don’t feel comfortable with. My longest shot was on a mule deer in Montana- exactly 525 yards away- the yardage was determined by using my Leica laser range finder. I had been to the range to practice at 300 yards on many occasions, with the exact same loads and equipment I was using in the field. I had studied and memorized the ballistics of my 7mm Rem Magnum and had a printed copy in my fanny pack in case I forgot them. I had also studied how my mil dot scope could be utilized to its best advantage. The deer was dispatched quickly and I am proud to have the memory of that hunt to share with my kids. They ask me to tell the story over and over again! Below is a photo of that mule deer.

The truth of the matter is that I would not have a success story to tell if I wasn’t prepared and if I didn’t have the tools to help me to make that shot. Including an accurate gun that could put the bullet where I wanted it to go, a laser range finder that would continue to update me as to the exact distance the bullet needed to travel based on the deers ever changing location as it grazed in the meadow, and a ballistics chart that told me exactly how to compensate based on all of the factors of my gun, caliber, scope, bullet weight and design, etc. It amazes me what can be accomplished with the right tools. I also know that I would not have been able to make that shot a reality if I had not been prepared, if I had not had someone else show me that it could be done and if I had not possessed the tools to pull it off. I’d have been left hanging! Just watching that deer walk by in the distance. I would have had another memory of the one that got away and the reality that I had failed to take advantage of the opportunity in front of me.
